Olm

Blind cave salamander adapted to permanent darkness.

The olm (Proteus anguinus) is an aquatic salamander, the only species in the genus Proteus and the only exclusively cave-dwelling chordate in Europe. It is notable for its adaptations to a life of complete darkness, including undeveloped eyes, acute senses of smell and hearing, and a lack of skin pigmentation in most populations.

The olm's eyes are regressed and covered by skin, leaving it blind, but it compensates with highly developed smell, hearing, and electroreception. It can detect sound waves from 10 to over 12,000 Hz, and registers weak electric fields and possibly Earth's magnetic field. It breathes with external gills and has rudimentary lungs. It feeds on small crustaceans, snails, and insect larvae. The olm exhibits neoteny, retaining larval features like external gills into adulthood.
