Naja
Venomous elapid snakes known as true cobras, found across Africa and Asia.
Naja is a genus of venomous snakes in the elapid family, commonly referred to as true cobras. Their range extends across Africa, Southwest Asia, South Asia, and Southeast Asia. While other elapids like the king cobra and rinkhals are often called cobras, they are not true cobras because they do not belong to this genus.
The genus has undergone significant taxonomic changes in recent years. Previously thought to contain 20 to 22 species, a widely accepted 2009 revision merged the genera *Boulengerina* and *Paranaja* into *Naja*, bringing the total to 38 species. The name *Naja* comes from the Sanskrit word *nāga* (with a hard "g"), meaning "snake." Some link this to the English word "snake" and related Germanic and Proto-Indo-European roots, but linguist Manfred Mayrhofer considers that connection unconvincing, suggesting instead a link to the Sanskrit *nagna*, meaning "hairless" or "naked."
Most *Naja* species are relatively slender and can reach about 1.84 meters (6 feet) in total length. Larger species, such as the forest cobra (*Naja melanoleuca*), may reach around 3.1 meters (10 feet). All true cobras can raise the front part of their body and flatten their necks to appear larger to threats. Fang structure varies: all species except the Indian cobra (*Naja naja*), Egyptian cobra (*Naja haje*), and Caspian cobra (*Naja oxiana*) have some adaptation for spitting venom.
All *Naja* species can deliver a fatal bite to humans. Their venom is primarily neurotoxic, attacking the nervous system and causing paralysis, but many species also have cytotoxic components that cause swelling, tissue death, and anticoagulant effects. Some venoms also contain cardiotoxins. Spitting cobras have specialized fangs with a shortened, rounded opening on the front surface, allowing them to squirt venom forward rather than inject it downward. This spitting is mainly defensive; the venom has little effect on intact skin but can cause severe pain and temporary or permanent blindness if it reaches the eyes. A recent study found that all three spitting cobra lineages have evolved higher pain-inducing activity due to increased levels of phospholipase A2, which amplifies the pain from cytotoxins. The study also suggests that the evolution of spitting in African and Asian cobras coincided with the divergence of humans and chimpanzees in Africa and the arrival of *Homo erectus* in Asia
