Mole salamander

North American salamanders known for neoteny and regeneration.

Mole salamanders (genus *Ambystoma*) are a group of advanced salamanders found only in North America. They are famous largely because of two species: the axolotl (*A. mexicanum*), a key subject in studies of paedomorphosis, and the tiger salamander (*A. tigrinum* and *A. mavortium*), a common pet and the official amphibian of four US states.

Terrestrial adults have wide, protruding eyes, thick arms, and prominent costal grooves. Most species show vivid patterns—like deep blue spots or large yellow bars—on a dark background. These adults live alone, feeding on any available invertebrates, and spend nearly all their time underground in burrows (either dug themselves or taken over from other animals). Some northern species hibernate in these burrows through winter. They only enter water to return to the ponds where they hatched and breed.

All mole salamanders are oviparous, laying large clumps of eggs in water. The larvae are fully aquatic, with three pairs of external gills behind the head and above the gill slits, plus large caudal fins running from the back of the head to the tail and cloaca. They grow limbs soon after hatching—four toes on the front legs, five on the back—and have wide-set eyes without true eyelids. In some species, especially southern ones and tiger salamanders, larvae can reach adult size before metamorphosis. During metamorphosis, gills and fins vanish; the tail, skin, and limbs thicken; eyelids develop; and the lungs become fully functional, enabling a fully terrestrial life.

Some species, and even some populations of normally terrestrial species, are neotenic—they keep their larval form into adulthood. The axolotl is the most famous example. Because they cannot produce thyroxine, the only way to trigger metamorphosis is by injecting it from outside, which usually shortens the salamander’s lifespan.

Tiger salamanders (the *Ambystoma tigrinum* complex) have large heads, small eyes, and thick bodies—a basic shape shared by most mole salamanders—but they are among the largest of the genus and have relatively big larvae. They live across a wide range of ecosystems in North America, and different subpopulations show different morphologies and behaviors.
